I feel that it is imperative that the Chair of the Education Committee come from Boston's Communities of Color to best represent the overwhelming majority student and parent population. It is only appropriate to appoint a councilor of color as chair of a committee dealing with a school system that has 85% children of color. This is all the more important as the committee grapples with appointment of a new superintendent, and the percentage of teachers of color remains stuck at 35%. It comes as no surprise, Mr. Flaherty, that as one who continues to push for re-segregation of the Boston Public School system, you have a well known record of introducing resolutions in support for Bush's illegal war and occupation of Iraq while preventing anti-war resolutions from coming to the floor.
